The evolution of rail traffic, measured as trains per kilometer and the number of passengers at the Adif and Adif AV stations, has reflected notable increases in the first month of the year.

The year 2023 registered a historical record of traffic, which is explained by the liberalization of rail passenger transport – Spain is the first European country with three railway companies in the market – and the commissioning of new lines that, at high speed, They now exceed 4,000 kilometers and consolidate Spain’s leadership in Europe.

By type of services, the most significant increase is recorded in Long Distance traffic (18 percent) and, specifically, in the high-speed network (21.2 percent). Local and interurban traffic in the period increased by 2.4 percent and merchandise traffic by 7.1 percent.

By rail axes, in high speed the growth of the Madrid-Andaluca corridor (35.3 percent) stands out, followed by Madrid-Levante (30.9 percent), Madrid-Barcelona (9.9 percent) and Madrid-Valladolid Len -Zamora-Galicia (2.4 percent).

On conventional lines, the largest increase in traffic is recorded on the Madrid-Valencia-Cambiador de La Boella line (10.9 percent), driven by freight traffic that exceeds that of January 2022.
