NATO opened today a new tactical airbase in Kuchova, southern Albania, the “Albanian Daily News” reported, BTA reports.

Albanian Defense Minister Niko Peleschi said during the opening ceremony that it will be the main base of the Albanian Air Force. He added that the new airbase will be an important point for the alliance and for the region.

Meanwhile, David Wisner, chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Tirana, who also attended the ceremony, said Albania was proving to be a reliable partner in defending common Western values.

He added that despite the challenges, NATO remains the most stable and successful alliance in history.

Earlier, the Commander of the Air Force of Albania, Brigadier General Ferdinand Dimo, indicated that nearly 50 million euros have been invested in the airbase by the Alliance and more than five million euros by the Albanian government. NATO troops can be accommodated and trained at the air base and flights of the Alliance’s aircraft can be carried out. Albania joined NATO in 2009.
