At the Opera Studio at the Baku Music Academy named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli, on March 6 at 19.00 there will be a screening of the play “Not this one, so this one” with the participation of famous actors, Day.Az reports.

“If not this one, then this one” is a musical comedy (operetta) in four acts by the outstanding Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, written in 1910. Over the years, the work has been staged with great success at various theater venues, shown at international festivals, and a film of the same name was made. “If not this one, then this one” is still one of the most beloved comedies of the Azerbaijani audience.

The image of Mashadi Ibad is familiar to every Azerbaijani from early childhood; he has looked at us more than once from the pages of satirical publications, paintings by domestic cartoonists, from theater posters, and even served as interior decoration in the form of national souvenirs… It is difficult to meet in Azerbaijan a person who I wouldn’t know by heart the plot of the immortal comedy of the great Uzeyir Hajibeyli “If it’s not like this, then it’s this one.”

Leading soloists of the State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet – People’s Artists Azer Zeynalov (Meshadi Ibad), Akram Poladov (Rustam Bek), Honored Artists Ramil Gasimov (Sarvar), Jahangir Gurbanov (Gochu Asker), Gulyustan Aliyeva ( Senem), Tural Agasiyev (Rza beg), Alekber Aliyev (Gasangulu beg), soloist Gunel Hajiyeva (Gulnaz), Fakhmin Ahmedly (Hasan beg), Khalyg Bekirov (Ambal) and others.

The conductor is Honored Artist Sevil Gadzhieva, the director is Honored Artist Hafiz Guliyev.

Uzeyir Hajibeyli, with his comedy, reveals the social and everyday prejudices widespread in society at the beginning of the 20th century and uses laughter and satire for this. He chose such an original path to put forward his ideas in those years. And the psychotypes of people were so skillfully described that the comedy is relevant at all times, as it reveals human vices – greed, hypocrisy, lies, cowardice, etc.

The main characters of the work are lovers – student Sarvar and the bek’s daughter Gulnaz. Her father, the bankrupt Rustam Bek, wants to marry his young daughter to the rich elderly merchant Mashadi Ibad. It’s hard for Gulnaz to contradict her tyrant father, so the maid Senem stands up for her. In his heart, Rustam bek understands that he can make his only daughter unhappy. But he sees no other way out, since he owes Mashadi Ibad a very large sum of money. Naturally, Sarvar does not agree with this state of affairs and finds a way out… As you know, in those years, after the wedding, the bride was brought to the groom’s house under a wedding veil. But when Mashadi Ibad tries to throw off the veil, Sarwar appears before his stunned gaze. Threatening with a toy pistol, Sarvar forces Mashadi Ibad to write that he refuses to take Gulnaz as his wife, and instead marries the maid Senem. The maid herself is not against it, since she also wanted to find family happiness. As a result, Mashadi Ibad, having come to terms with the “loss” of his young lover, asks to approve his marriage with Sen. Not that one, so this one…

By the way, when Uzeir Hajibeyli wrote this work, he was only 25 years old, and he described 50-year-old Mashadi Ibad as already an old man. When Uzeir Hajibeyli himself turned 50, he admitted that this age was far from senile…
