They have also appealed to the Karnataka High Court and the National Human Rights Commission to intervene in the college administration’s dress code. The petition filed by the students will come up for hearing in the Karnataka High Court tomorrow.
An order was also issued on behalf of the Government of Karnataka that students should come to school only in appropriate school uniforms. This has been strongly opposed by various parties, including the Congress and the secular Janata Dal.
Meanwhile, the issue has become nationally controversial as some have joined the struggle to wear the khawi piece against the hijab struggle. In this situation, students are allowed to wear burda and hijab at the Government Arts College in Udupi. Similarly, students have been allowed to wear hijab at a government college in Kundapura.
Separate classrooms are reserved for students wearing the hijab. Classes were suspended today after some students who came to the Sandeshwar school premises in Vijayapura wore saffron.
