The Orbán government’s planned renationalization of the Ferenc Liszt International Airport received unexpected praise.
“It is a good idea to take infrastructure of strategic importance into public hands,” said József Váradi in connection with the upcoming takeover of the airport’s operating company, Budapest Airport (BA) Zrt. The CEO of the low-cost airline Wizz Air added in an interview for the business portal vg.hu: “Especially if the government takes the French Vinci on board, a professional operator that has a high international reputation.” The aviation expert also recalled the international practice where nationalization of airports occurs again and again.
The low-cost airline with Hungarian roots has a 38% market share in its “home market”, while its biggest competitor Ryanair has 26%, Váradi noted about the rival’s recent declaration of war on wanting to become the market leader in Hungary.
