Islamabad/New Delhi: On January 22 this year, when the consecration was taking place in the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the country’s top security agencies including the cyber cell were dealing with a major threat. According to the Economic Times report, on the occasion of the inauguration of Ram Temple in January, hackers and cyber criminals from China and Pakistan were continuously targeting Indian websites. Among the websites that were targeted by hackers, the Ram Mandir site was prominent. Along with this, websites of Prasar Bharati and important institutions present in Uttar Pradesh were also included.

How was the attack foiled?

The report quoted officials as saying that the government feared that attacks by hackers might increase on the occasion of the consecration of the Ram temple. Due to this, Telecom Security Center (TSOC) started 24-hour monitoring of 264 websites including Ram Mandir, Prasar Bharati, UP Police, Airport, UP Tourism and Power Grid, so that cyber attacks could be foiled by any means. During this period, 140 IP addresses were identified which were continuously targeting the website of Ram Mandir and Prasar Bharati.

Quoting an official, the report said that these attacks reduced after blocking 1244 IP addresses. Another official said that apart from abroad, some hacking attempts were also made from inside India which were foiled.

An official told the Economic Times that it is a matter of pride that the measures taken to prevent cyber attacks were developed in the country itself. The official said, a strategy for the security of digital infrastructure was made during the G20 summit before the Ram Temple inauguration. The Department of Telecommunications had used indigenously developed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques to predict these attacks.
