Prevalence of Glaucoma in Sri Lanka Rising: Awareness Campaign Urged for Those Over 50 Years Old

According to World Data Analysis reports, the prevalence of glaucoma in Sri Lanka has increased by 5 percent, according to the Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Palitha Mahipala.

He also mentioned that globally this level is 3.54 percent.

This year, March 10 to 16 is known as Glaucoma Week and this year’s theme is Unite for a Glaucoma Free World.

People over 50 years of age

He said that it is necessary for people above 50 years of age to have an eye examination, especially if someone in their family or relatives is suffering from this disease.

One of the leading causes of blindness

It is pointed out that glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness in the world and in this country.

Based on this, eye clinics across the country will conduct awareness programs for patients in the districts of Galle, Puttalam, Badulai, Kandy and Jaffna and will run special glaucoma eye clinics.
