The former director of the Los Ríos Judiciary Council, Rodrigo Frías Toral, is the best qualified in the contest to elect the new Public Defender.

It was during a session of the Citizen Selection Commission, in charge of electing this new official.

With 7 votes in favor, the resolution was approved with the final grades of the 12 applicants. In that document it was established that the best scorer in the contest would be Rodrigo Frías Toral, former director of the Los Ríos Judiciary, with 96.4 points out of 100.

He is followed by the former judge of the National Court of Justice, Byron Guillén with 83.4 points and in third place the former prosecutor of Los Ríos, Jorge Ballesteros, with 80 points.

The applicants obtained these qualifications after going through the merit phase, the written and practical test. But there is still a stage missing that could change the result.

With this resolution, the CPCCS has 3 days to convene this phase. In the event that there are citizen challenges against the applicants, the Commission must set a hearing for the prosecution and defense evidence to be presented.

If the challenge is accepted, that applicant could be disqualified. Therefore, until then it cannot be known who will be the new Public Defender.

Tania Chamorro, secretary of the Selection Commission, said that the Citizen Participation and Social Control Council (CPCCS) was required to convene the Public Scrutiny and Citizen Challenge process of the applicants.
