NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a military alliance formed by 31 countries under the leadership of the United States after World War II.

If another country tries to attack or invade a NATO member country, all NATO countries stand united to support the member country. If a country wishes to become a member, all countries must approve the request.

After decades of neutrality without participating in any world war, Sweden turned pro-American after the Russia-Ukraine war.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Sweden changed its stance and applied for NATO membership.

But Hungary refused to support Sweden’s annexation, calling it “a country against itself”. Turkey, another NATO member, refused to join Sweden, accusing it of “supporting Kurdish separatists against its country”.

Last January, Turkey reversed its decision and supported Sweden’s NATO membership.

A few weeks ago, Hungary also changed its position.

Sweden’s accession to NATO was officially announced yesterday, with all obstacles to Sweden’s accession to NATO removed.

Sweden is the 32nd member country to join NATO.

“This is a historic day,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said of Sweden’s accession.

Speaking about this, Swedish President Ulf Kristersson thanked all the member countries.
