Being a woman and having addictions means carrying a backpack of discrimination, stigma and violence. UNAD, the Addiction Care Network, aims to raise awareness in society of this “double social penalty” coinciding with International Women’s Day.

To focus attention on the reality of women with addictions and put aside the stigma against them, UNAD has launched the campaign “Don’t get lost, focus on it.”

According to data from UNAD’s addiction profile, in the last year a total of 47,033 people with drug addictions and other addictions were treated in this network, of which only 25% were women.
It has also warned that women take, on average, ten years longer than men to ask for help and access resources, and they also do so in worse physical and psychological conditions.

Violence against women with addictions
More than 60% of drug-dependent women have suffered sexual violence from men during their period of consumption, as well as sexual abuse during their childhood and adolescence, according to UNAD.
“This further aggravates their situation because there are no specific resources to address both situations, even if they have active consumption, their entry is limited,” points out the NGO network that brings together more than 200 organizations from all over Spain.
“All this makes women with addictions even more invisible,” they lament.
