  • Now the way has been cleared for the development of fifth generation fighter aircraft in India.
  • Central Modi government approved a project worth Rs 15 thousand crores.
  • Currently in the world only America, Russia and China are included in this club.

New Delhi: India is now going to join the top club of America, Russia and China. The Modi government has approved the development and prototype production of next generation fighter aircraft for the Air Force. This step will open up a huge opportunity for the domestic manufacturing ecosystem and give a combat edge to the armed forces. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Thursday approved the proposal worth an estimated Rs 15 thousand crore, taking the project beyond the development stage and prototype production. India has an ambitious target of flying the Advanced Multirole Fighter Aircraft (AMCA) i.e. the fifth generation fighter jet by 2028.

Army will get fifth generation indigenous fighter jet

Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an agency under the Defense Ministry, is developing the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). These fighter jets will be fifth generation and indigenous. These will be of double engine. Its design will be such that the enemy’s radar will not be able to detect it or when it comes very close to the enemy, its radar will be able to detect it. By then the aircraft will have plenty of time to target the enemy. Its design is ready. The project was awaiting approval. Now work on its development can be expected to start soon. It is expected to be ready within two years and its first flight will take place a year later.

Fighter jets will be equipped with cutting edge technology

In fact, the new jets will have the latest military technologies, including stealth features, Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, long-range engagement capabilities and the ability to jointly operate with unmanned systems. According to the plan, four to five prototype aircraft will be produced and then tested and verified before serial production. The final order for the jet is expected to be in the range of lakhs of crores.

Fighter planes will be built with private companies

India has decided to produce the next generation fighter aircraft with considerable participation of the private sector. According to the plan, the final production of the jet will be carried out by a special purpose vehicle (SPV) consisting of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Aeronautical Development Authority and a private sector partnership. The private company selected after an in-depth selection process that considers technical capabilities will have the opportunity to join a select global league capable of manufacturing state-of-the-art aeronautical systems.

The way is clear to become a huge indigenous company in the defense sector.

In western countries, all the defense companies are in the private sector. When needed, they get help from government funded labs and institutions. The SPV model envisioned for mega projects is expected to create a giant Indian company. However, it will carry a huge responsibility as the aircraft will be in service for more than three decades. For this the company will need to create a life support system. HAL plans to offer its existing facilities in Nashik to any private company that wants to produce AMCA in future. The same facility is currently being upgraded to manufacture Light Combat Aircraft Mk1A for the ongoing order of the Air Force.
The AMCA project is also linked to India’s ambitions for an indigenous fighter jet engine programme. The initial batch of 40 AMCA jets as well as the prototypes will be powered by GE 414 engines, but work is currently underway to select a foreign partner to jointly develop a more powerful engine capable of delivering 110 kn of thrust. How the generation of fighter jets is decided, know

Keep in mind that till now only America, Russia and China have made fifth generation aircraft. Technology changes with time and thus different generations of aircraft are made. The fighter aircraft made after 1970-80 were called fourth generation. The aircraft built in the beginning of the year 2000 are fifth generation aircraft. If the fourth generation aircraft can be modified by adding some new technology to it, then it will be called 4.5 generation. Currently the Air Force has fourth generation and 4.5 generation aircraft.
