China purchased 88.3 million tons of oil and 22.1 million tons of natural gas abroad in January and February, increasing their supplies by 5.1% and 23.6%, respectively. As follows from the published data, the value of oil imports increased by 2.8%, to $51.28 billion. As for gas, the corresponding figure decreased in monetary terms by 5.5%, to $11.31 billion.

Russia is a leading energy exporter to China. In 2023, China purchased 107 million tons of oil from Russia (an increase of 24%) and 8 million tons of liquefied natural gas (an increase of 23%). Supplies via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline increased 1.5 times, to a record 22.7 billion cubic meters. m.

According to GTU calculations, China in 2023 increased oil imports by 11% (to 563.99 million tons), gas – by 9.9% (to 119.97 million tons). The cost of these energy resources amounted to $337.49 billion (a decrease of 7.7%) and $64.34 billion (a decrease of 8.1%), respectively.

Coal import

Coal supplies (including lignite) to China in January-February increased by 22.9% and amounted to 74.51 million tons. According to published data, the value of coal imports during this period decreased by 5.1%, to $7.93 billion.

Russia is dynamically increasing exports of this energy carrier to China. As Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak previously stated, in 2023 China increased purchases of Russian coal by 52%. This is about 90 million tons.

According to statistics, in 2022 China reduced imports of coal raw materials (including lignite) by 9.2%, to 293.2 million tons. In 2023, the country increased purchases by 61.8%, they amounted to 474.41 million tons.
