Seventy-ninth years of the Drava defensive operation of the Bulgarian army in the Second World War, known as the Drava epic, were celebrated by Silistrians. In the operation, the Thirty-first Silistren Infantry Regiment (Iron) distinguished itself with its heroism.

Wreaths and flowers were placed in front of the monument of the regiment and the memorial wall built next to it with the names of fallen fighters, the mayor of Silistra Municipality Alexander Sabanov, the chairman of the local Municipal Council Dimitar Trendafilov, municipal councilors and citizens.

In the battles near the Drava River in Hungary from March 6 to 21, 1945, the 31st Silistren Regiment (Iron) managed to stop the advance of the troops of the Third Reich in the Kishbayom – Drava Sobolch – Drava Cekhi section.

The exact number of all killed by the regiment in the final stage of the Second World War is 444 people. Of them, 206 are from Silistra region. Their number was established thanks to the work of the Silistren historian and teacher Todor Nikolaev.

In 2018, their names, along with those of 118 fallen Silistrians from other regiments and military formations in the Second World War, were immortalized on the Memorial Wall of Fame. It was erected in close proximity to the monument to the 31st Infantry Regiment.
