You were a normal kid. He went to school, played with friends. He was a little more withdrawn. This set him apart from his classmates. He had no mental problems when he graduated from high school. This is what the father of Ilko Zahariev, better known as the Red Pirate, Nikolay Zahariev told Nova.
“I found out from the television that my son was accused. I saw in the news that he was in court. I was surprised, I did not expect such things to happen. His mother and I are divorced, he studies in Sofia and only contacts his mother , so we haven’t heard from each other for 10 years. He was a normal student, he graduated with honors. He enjoyed mathematics along with drawing, so he applied for architecture.”
His father added that after what happened with the mother, they started to keep in touch again.
“He had problems 4 years ago. Then he wanted to be in silence. He always wanted to be alone, in peace. I think that’s when these mental problems started for him.”
“As far as I understood, he went to give damaged phones for repair in a repair shop, and then he sold them so he could buy paint brushes,” added the father.
“I hope he is placed in a psychiatric clinic so he can get treatment and get back into society.”
