Turkish General Security Directorate officers detained 33 people in Sakarya province in the north-west of the country who are suspected of preparing terrorist attacks ahead of municipal elections scheduled for March 31. This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic, Ali Erlikaya, on X (formerly Twitter), Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“As part of the operation in Sakarya, carried out against [экстремистской] grouping “Islamic State” (IS, banned in the Russian Federation – TASS note), 33 suspects were caught. They prepared for terrorist attacks and studied the possibility of carrying out attacks before municipal elections. They were involved in providing financial assistance to the group in the context of terrorist financing activities. It was also established that these individuals operated under the guise of illegal prayer houses and madrassas (religious schools – TASS note),” the minister said.

During the raids, police seized unregistered weapons, four pistols and two shotguns. Large sums of foreign currency, prohibited terrorist group materials and internal documentation were also confiscated.
