In a long report published on Saturday, March 7, 1959, in the newspaper “Athletic Echo” and signed by the correspondent George D. Farmakis, there is also an important piece of news concerning the establishment of the Athletic Gymnastic Association of Ioannina (AGSI) with the number 38/ 1959 decision of the Multi-member Court of First Instance of Ioannina.

It is about the well-known large club of the city that closes 65 years of operation, with great activity in classical sports, basketball and volleyball. In fact, in athletics, for the first time in its history, AGSI was declared champion of Greece, for 2023.
Giorgos Farmakis in his response notes among others: “Its establishment, which belongs to the extraordinary efforts of Mr. Frangopoulou, Topali, Gortzi et al. it will be a station for the revitalization of the declining classical sports football clubs due to indifference. The temporary board appointed Mr. Achillean Fragopoulos as temporary president. The purpose of this new club is entirely athletic, and it will establish sections of all sports, except football. In this effort, he needs everyone’s support and everyone is sure that the General Secretariat of Extracurricular Sports will understand the high task he undertakes to perform and will help him financially, now that he is in the first steps and will meet infinite difficulty”. How prophetic and thorough was the report of Giorgos Farmakis, as what he wrote then was verified in the 65 years of operation of the AGSI, which really did not deal with football but highlighted the other sports. In classical sports, he became the champion of Greece, in volleyball he rose to the A1 category and in basketball to the B’ National, highlighting great players. AGSI is one of the most important clubs in the region.
