If Yerevan continues the course of moving away from Moscow and getting closer to the West, Russia will have to seriously “reconsider” its relations with Armenia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia said this at a press conference after the international diplomacy forum held in Antalya, Turkey last weekend Sergey Lavrov said.

Lavrov rejected the increasingly sharp criticism of the Armenian leadership and said that the Armenian government has reoriented the direction of the country towards “enemies who do not benefit anyone in the world”.

“For some reason, in Armenia, they believe that they should build their lives not with close neighbors and peoples who are historically united with your people, but with countries that are hostile to your friends.”

Sergey Lavrov called on the leadership of Armenia to make a “final choice” regarding its “frozen membership” in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and its participation in the Eurasian Economic Union.

Azatutyun, the Armenian service of RFE/RL, writes that Lavrov accused Yererva of being ungrateful towards Russia, which stopped the 6-week war. Lavrov said that Yerevan bears the responsibility for the defeat.

“The war could have been stopped earlier, before the Azerbaijanis took Shusha. But Nikol Pashinyan said in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal that “we will fight to the end.”

The Russian Foreign Minister similarly rejected Yerevan’s criticism of the CSTO. He said that it was Pashinyan who vetoed the agreement to send an “observer mission” of the CSTO in 2022.
