Texas: Paul Alexander, who lived with an ‘iron lung’ for 70 years after contracting polio, has died. Paul, who contracted polio at the age of six, died at the age of 78. In 1952, Paul became paralyzed from the head down due to polio. Unable to breathe on his own, Paul was then transferred to a hospital in Texas and placed on an iron lung. Many children, including Alexander, contracted polio during a major outbreak in the United States.

But despite the limitations, Alexander graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and became a lawyer. He published a memoir in 2020. The iron lung is the respiratory support system that covers most of a person’s body. Its use in the new health field is outdated.
