At least 8 people were killed and another 330 injured during events to mark the Chaharshanbe-Suri holiday in Iran from February 20 to March 11.

According to him, more than 150 people received burns of varying severity. At least 86 victims remain in hospitals, 11 of them in intensive care units.

In turn, the ISNA agency, citing Iranian police spokesman Said Montazer ol-Mahdi, reported that the death toll during the celebration was 10 people. About 70% of those injured during the celebrations were people under 18 years of age.

In addition, ol-Mahdi said that during this period, law enforcement agencies discovered more than 10 tons of flammable substances.

Every year, one of the oldest holidays, Chaharshanbe-Suri, or “Red Wednesday,” is celebrated throughout Iran. Mass celebrations traditionally take place in the last week before the Iranian New Year – Nowruz. On Tuesday evening, millions of Iranians take to the streets of cities and villages and light bonfires, which they jump over throughout the night.
