Public discussions took place on the topic of consanguineous marriages, organized jointly by the State Committee of Azerbaijan on Family, Women and Children, the Center for Social Research and “Xalq qəzeti”.

As Day.Az reported on Tuesday with reference to Trend, the heads of the structures that organized the discussions, deputies, representatives of government agencies and civil society, and experts took part in them.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Board of the Center for Social Research, Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on Human Rights Zahid Oruz noted that most consanguineous marriages were recorded in North Africa and in the regions sub-Saharan, the Middle East, Central and South Asia. “In Pakistan and India, the rates are 73 and 60 percent respectively. According to the latest UNICEF report and its 2017 child mortality estimate, Pakistan has the highest neonatal mortality rate in the world at 46 deaths per 1,000 people,” he said.

At the event, it was noted that the state is taking the necessary measures on the topic under discussion. Changes are being made to legislation, new documents are being adopted, and educational work is being carried out. However, despite this, the stereotypes that exist in some families sometimes still lead to consanguineous marriages. In this regard, taking into account the consequences of such marriages, it was proposed to make appropriate changes to Article 12 of the Family Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.
