The cartoonist Coco, survivor of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in 2015, denounced on Tuesday the violent attacks targeting her since the publication the day before in the newspaper Libération of a caricature on the famine in Gaza.

The drawing in question, under the vignette “Ramadan in Gaza” and the caption “beginning of a month of fasting”, shows a skeletal Gazan running after rats, while a woman hits his hand by throwing “Ttt, not before sunset”, in the middle of ruins where we can see the hand of a corpse.

The caricature “underlines the despair of the Palestinians, denounces the famine in Gaza”, relentlessly bombed by the Israeli army and where the UN fears widespread famine, “and also mocks the absurdity of religion”, argued Coco Tuesday on X, where she published a “small anthology” of death threats targeting her and her family, as well as the anti-Semitic messages received since its publication.

“They should have liquidated you on January 7”

“You will not have our hatred but you deserve it,” LFI MP Sophia Chikirou, close to Jean-Luc Mélenchon, commented on The seed.

On the same network, an Internet user tells her, in English, “run, run whore… You will be shot soon. The whole family dead.” “They should have liquidated you on January 7,” adds another, in reference to the attack which decimated the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo in 2015.

“This violence must not be trivialized”

The designer, who joined Libération in 2021 and lives under close protection, can count on daily support. “We condemn, we strongly denounce this wave of threats, insults and intimidation, some including death threats which we take very seriously,” Dov Alfon, the editorial director of Libération, declared to AFP, announcing a press release of “support and solidarity” in Wednesday’s edition. “This violence must not be trivialized,” insisted Dov Alfon, without commenting on possible complaints.

“The editorial management of the newspaper and the Society of Journalists and Liberation Staff (SJPL) denounce with the greatest vigor this intimidation, some including death threats. These attacks on our colleague must in no way be trivialized, and we assure her of our solidarity and support,” write the daily’s journalists in their press release.

The national secretary of the PCF, Fabien Roussel, also gave his “full support” to Coco sur X. “Forever by your side, and by Charlie’s side,” he added.
