What is the government’s Ujala scheme?

Ujala Yojana is also called Urja Jyoti Yojana. It is an initiative of the Government of India which was launched to promote electricity saving and encourage energy efficiency. This scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 January 2015.

What is the intention of Ujala scheme?

The main objective of this scheme is to replace old and low energy efficiency bulbs used in homes with LED bulbs. LED bulbs consume up to 80% less electricity than traditional bulbs. This saves electricity. Besides this, greenhouse gas emissions also reduce. Under the Ujala scheme, the government provides LED bulbs on subsidy. Consumers can buy these bulbs from their nearest dealer or electricity distribution company (DISCOM). Till now 9W, 7W and 5W LED bulbs were available under the Ujala scheme.
