by time news

HistoryThe quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League are back – Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig in the round of 16 and are once again in the last eight. Before the draw for possible opponents (Friday, 12 p.m.), REAL TOTAL looks back at the last ten duels for the Royals in the quarter-finals of the premier class.

Juventus, Atlético, Chelsea and many more – this is how Real Madrid’s last ten appearances in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League went.

April 12, 2023 – Chelsea FC – 2-0 (first leg) – 2-0 (second leg)

Chelsea in the quarter-finals, was there something? The Royals faced the Blues again in the 2023/24 season! Real won the first leg in front of their home crowd 2-0 with goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio. Los Blancos left no doubts in the second leg either and went into the next round with a 2-0 win thanks to a brace from Rodrygo.

April 6, 2022 – Chelsea FC – 3:1 (first leg) – 2:3 aet (second leg)

The blues as a stumbling block? When Real Madrid won their 14th European Cup (“La Decimocuarta”) in the 2022/23 season, the Whites met reigning title holders Chelsea in the quarterfinals. At Stamford Bridge, Los Blancos secured a 3-1 away win thanks to Karim Benzema’s hat-trick. But the second leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu was tough: The Blues took a 3-0 lead and it was only thanks to Rodrygo’s goal in the 80th minute that Los Blancos were able to save themselves into extra time. It happened as it had to happen this season: in extra time, the eventual Ballon d’Or winner Benzema scored the decisive goal with his head after an assist.

April 6, 2021 – Liverpool FC – 3:1 (first leg) – 0:0 (second leg)

Victory in front of empty stands: During the renovation work at the Bernabéu, the Royal team moved to the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano. In the quarter-finals they faced Liverpool. Vinícius, who slowly but surely discovered his goal this season, secured a 3-1 home win with his brace together with Marco Asensio. In the second leg at the empty Anfield Road, both teams neutralized each other and a goalless draw followed.

April 3, 2018 – Juventus – 3:1 (first leg) – 1:3 (second leg)

CR7 keeps calm: In the 2017/18 season, Ronaldo and Marcelo secured a confident 3-0 away win with his brace. One action in the game made history: After a cross from Carvajal on the right side of the penalty area, the Portuguese took heart and scored his second goal of the evening with an overhead kick against keeper Buffon. Even the Old Lady fans applauded this dream goal. So the second leg was just a formality, right? Absolutely not – Juventus equalized the first leg result at the Bernabéu and it took a penalty just before the end that would take Los Blancos to their eventual third Champions League title in a row. CR7 showed his calmness from the spot and converted the penalty against substitute Szczęsny.

April 12, 2017 – FC Bayern – 2:1 (first leg) – 4:2 aet (second leg)

The Bayern horror? The first leg ended 2-1 for Real Madrid thanks to a brace from CR7. But the Munich team didn’t give up – first the Royals supposedly shot their way into the semi-finals thanks to the Portuguese. Unfortunately, an own goal from Sergio Ramos sent the second leg into extra time. There, Los Blancos proved why they were probably the best team in the world this season. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick with two more goals in stoppage time – albeit from offside positions – and Marco Asensio sealed the end for Bayern with his goal.

April 6, 2016 – VfL Wolfsburg – 0:2 (first leg) – 3:0 (second leg)

Shock after 90 minutes: The first leg of the 2015/16 season went differently than expected for the Merengues. With a 2-0 defeat, the Bernabéu had to ensure a remontada – and that’s what Los Blancos did: a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo – with the right foot, with the head and with a direct free kick – gave Wolves’ dreams of a surprising advance still burst.

April 14, 2015 – Atlético Madrid – 0:0 (first leg) – 1:0 (second leg)

City derby on the big stage: In the 2014/15 season there was a repeat of last year’s Champions League final in the quarter-finals. In the venerable Vicente Calderón, the city rivals played out a goalless draw. The second leg at the Bernabéu had been pointing to extra time for a long time, but one Mexican had something against it: After an assist from Cristiano Ronaldo, Javier Hernández was able to prevent the threat of extra time with his goal in the 88th minute and secure the Royals’ place in the next round.

April 2, 2014 – Borussia Dortmund – 3:0 (first leg) – 0:2 (second leg)

The path to the long-awaited tenth Champions League triumph “La Décima”: Real Madrid secured a commanding home win in the first leg of the 2013/14 season with goals from Gareth Bale, Isco and Ronaldo. At Signal Iduna Park, the Black and Yellows tried to do everything in their power to avoid elimination from the knockout phase, but Marco Reus’s two goals were not enough – also thanks to Casemiro’s legendary effort.

April 3, 2013 – Galatasaray – 3:0 (first leg) – 2:3 (second leg)

Final stop Istanbul? Galatasaray proved to be an opponent not to be underestimated in the 2012/13 season. The Whites won the first leg 3-0 in front of their home crowd with goals from CR7, Benzema and Higuaín. Galatasaray were able to score a total of three goals in the cauldron of Türk Telekom Arena, but it wasn’t enough – Los Blancos ended the dreams of the Turkish fans with a Ronaldo brace.

3/27/2012 – APOEL Nicosia – 3:0 (first leg) – 5:2 (second leg)

Goals gala at the Bernabéu! With APEOL Nicosia, Real Madrid had a viable quarter-final opponent in the 2011/12 season. The Whites won the first leg comfortably away from home with a brace from Karim Benzema and a goal from Kaká. In front of their home crowd, Los Blancos then ensured a real goal festival – a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, José Callejón and Ángel Di Mariá gave Real a 5-2 home win against the team from Cyprus.
