We’ve all had smartphones for over a decade now—and of course, some of us have inevitably dropped our favorite device in a puddle, sink, or toilet. Over the years, many people thought that placing a wet device in a bowl of rice would help absorb the moisture.

However, tech experts have long debunked this myth, and now Apple has joined them.

On its support page, Apple explicitly stated that you should not put a wet iPhone in a bag of rice. “This action may cause small rice particles to damage the iPhone,” tech support said.

In fact, when you connect a Lightning or USB-C cable or accessory to an iPhone starting with the XS model, the phone displays a warning if there is liquid in the charging port.

Most modern smartphones today have an IP67 or IP68 rating. The first digit categorizes the degree of dust resistance according to the standard, and the second digit categorizes the degree of water resistance according to the standard, where 6 is the highest degree that smartphones have.

However, Apple recommended that the phone should not be submerged in water and wrote on its website that “splash, water and dust resistance is variable and may weaken due to normal wear and tear.”

Additionally, Apple recommended reducing your exposure to substances such as soaps, cleaning products, acids or acidic foods, and any type of liquids such as perfumes, creams, and more.

What does Apple recommend if you come into contact with water?

Gently tap the phone on your palm to remove any remaining liquid. Place the device in a dry and ventilated area. After at least 30 minutes, try charging your iPhone again.

What else is prohibited besides putting your phone in a bowl of rice?

Apple emphasizes that you should not dry your iPhone using an external heat source (such as a hair dryer), as high temperatures can damage the device’s delicate components. In addition, the company emphasizes that no foreign objects, such as a Q-tip or paper towel, should be inserted into the charging socket.
