Chennai,

Tamil Nadu’s electricity demand is increasing at lightning speed every year. As the electricity tariff charged here is very low, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation is reeling in debt due to huge losses. To correct it, the Tamil Nadu government has provided Rs.17,117 crore as compensation fund to the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation in this financial year alone.

There is a situation where coal required for thermal power plants in Tamil Nadu has to be purchased from outside states and from abroad. To avoid such a situation, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Thangam Thennaras and Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Chairman Additional Chief Secretary Rajesh Lakhani are taking full measures to implement the projects of generating electricity from solar heat on a large scale.

Adani operates a 648 MW solar thermal power plant on 2,500 acres of land at Kamudi. It is the largest single solar thermal power plant in the world.

There is good scope for solar thermal power generation in Tamil Nadu. Because 300 days of solar heat per year is high. At this time, the “Prime Minister’s Sunrise Project” announced by the Central Government is a scheme to give a helping hand to Tamil Nadu. In this year’s central budget, solar panels will be installed on the roofs of one crore houses and 300 units of electricity per month will be made available for free, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had officially announced at the Kumbabhishekam of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This saves Rs.15,000 to Rs.18,000 per family per year. Revenue is also generated by giving the excess electricity to the power distribution corporation.

1.5 lakhs to install solar panels for houses producing electricity up to 3 kilowatts. In this, Rs.18 thousand for every kilowatt up to 3 kilowatts, and Rs.9 thousand for each subsequent kilowatt if installed between 3 to 10 kilowatts. The remaining amount can be borrowed from banks. The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation has set a target of installing solar panels in 25 lakh houses in Tamil Nadu out of these one crore houses. There are 2,837 Divisional Offices of Power Distribution Corporation in Tamil Nadu.

Employees in each office have been asked to encourage the registration of thousands of houses in the area for the scheme of installing solar panels. This is a good opportunity for the people of Tamil Nadu. Employees of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation should create good awareness about this scheme to the electricity consumers and guide them to generate income from the additional electricity available in summer not only free electricity.
