Guatemalan artists will take their art to the Sorbonne Panthéon University in Paris

The Sorbonne Panthéon University of Paris, together with Le Club des Entrepreneurs de la Sorbonne and the Association des Etudiants ADEIS, will present the contemporary art exhibition «Réalisme Magique et Olympique» or «Magical and Olympic Realism», in which they will participate seven artists from Guatemala and other Latin American countries.

This exhibition, curated by the prominent Adriana Silva of Arte al Paso Gallery, is a tribute to the cultural and artistic wealth of Latin America, with a special focus on Guatemala as the guest country.

The setting where it will be presented is the Sorbonne Panthéon University of Paris, one of the successor institutions of The Sorbonne which is considered among the oldest and most prestigious in the world. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when it was founded as a university in the city of Paris, France. Over the centuries, it has played a fundamental role in higher education, research and European culture.

This event, which is part of the celebrations of the eleventh Latin American and Caribbean Week, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of Nobel Prize winner Miguel Ángel Asturias, a leading figure of Magical Realism along with fellow Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez.

The term “magical realism,” originally coined by German art critic Franz Roh in 1925, comes to life in this exhibition that brings together 22 leading artists from across Latin America.

These artists, from Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic, offer a fascinating sample of the diversity of contemporary Latin American art.
