Six months after his entry into prison, things could perhaps be looking up again for Alfons Schuhbeck. According to a media report, he was transferred to a more comfortable prison.
The fallen German star chef Alfons Schuhbeck has been in prison since August. In October 2022 he was sentenced to three years and two months in prison for tax evasion worth millions.
Now, six months after his entry into prison, things may be looking up again: Schuhbeck is said to have been transferred to an open prison. “Bild” wants to know this from unspecified sources. According to the paper, Schuhbeck was transferred to the Rothenfeld correctional facility in Andechs on Monday. Schuhbeck should enjoy more freedom there and be allowed to leave the prison temporarily as a prisoner.
According to “Bild”, the reason for the decision is his good behavior during his first months of imprisonment in the Landsberg am Lech prison. Schuhbeck worked there voluntarily – no, not in the kitchen – in the library.

Schuhbeck, who has cooked for celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth II, Charlie Chaplin and the FC Bayern players, has been faced with the ruins of a great, long career since his prison sentence and the bankruptcy of his restaurants. All that remains are his spice shops, which are managed by the Schuhbecks Company and which have recently been the subject of repeated disputes due to non-payment of rent.
Shortly before the 74-year-old began his prison sentence, a job advertisement from the Landsberg am Lech correctional facility made headlines. The prison where he will now serve his sentence for tax evasion was looking for a new cook.
However, the deputy head of the prison said at the time when asked that the position could not be filled by prisoners. In addition, by the end of the application deadline a month ago, several people had already expressed interest in the position of chef or baker. (ag./sh)
