This time without sticking to the road

The activist group “Last Generation” demonstrated again with roadblocks in several places in Germany in support of more active actions regarding climate change, but unlike previous actions, the participants did not stick to the roadway, DPA reported.

About 130 participants blocked the busy bridge connecting the Berlin districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg – Warsaw Bridge at midday, police said. They repeatedly got up and sat down in both lanes.

In the Bavarian cities of Munich and Regensburg, police counted 120 and 150 demonstrators respectively at the reported and unregistered meetings. According to the local police in Munich, there were no serious traffic problems, BTA reported.

Not far from the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, 30 activists blocked traffic on the access road to the ferry port, according to police.

Initially, the police allowed the group to continue, but after a few hours they stopped the action. The majority of the participants were taken off the road by police officers, a police spokeswoman told DPA. Some of the group left the road voluntarily.

A spokesman for Last Generation had previously said the protesters wanted to stay longer, possibly until Sunday. The LNG terminal is “the pinnacle of fossil fuel madness,” he said.

The “last generation” is pushing for radical climate action, including a complete divestment of coal, oil and gas. The group has been organizing street blockades since early 2022, with participants sticking to road surfaces.
