Group Stage Draw at CONMEBOL Libertadores and CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2024

  • The draw to define the Groups in the CONMEBOL Libertadores and CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2024 will be held this Monday, March 18, at the CONMEBOL headquarters, in Luque – Paraguay.

The CONMEBOL Competitions and Operations Directorate announced the Draw Guidelines for the Group Phase of the CONMEBOL Libertadores and CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2024, continental tournaments in which 32 South American clubs participate in each, in search of Eternal Glory and The Great Conquest.

The draw can be seen live throughout South America and the world through the CONMEBOL Libertadores YouTube channel and the CONMEBOL Sudamericana channel.

– CONMEBOL Libertadores 2024 Draw Guidelines –

Group stage:

The 32 teams (28 directly qualified teams, plus the 4 classified teams from Phase 3), which will be divided into 8 groups of 4 clubs each, will compete in the Group Stage.

The composition of the groups will be established on the day of the Draw according to the champions of CONMEBOL Libertadores 2023, CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2023 and the CONMEBOL CLUBS Ranking of December 18, 2023:

  • The CONMEBOL LIBERTADORES 2023 Champion team will be placed directly as the top seed in Group A.
  • In order to establish the seeds of the remaining 7 Groups (B to H), the CONMEBOL CLUBS Ranking of December 18, 2023 will be used. The 7 seeded clubs from Groups B to H will be the ranked teams. in the first 7 locations according to the aforementioned Ranking, excluding the position of the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2023 Champion team.
  • The second line will be made up of the last CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2023 Champion, plus the 7 subsequent teams from the CONMEBOL CLUBS Ranking of December 18, 2023.
  • The third line will be formed by the 8 subsequent teams of the CONMEBOL CLUBS Ranking on December 18, 2023.
  • The fourth line will be made up of 4 teams from Phase 3 (G1, G2, G3 and G4) plus the 4 subsequent teams from the CONMEBOL CLUBS Ranking on December 18, 2023.
  • In the Group Stage each team will play one home match and one away match against each of the other teams in the same group.
  • The teams placed first and second in each group will qualify for the Round of 16 Phase.
  • The 8 teams located in third position in their respective groups will qualify for the Round of 16 Playoff Phase of CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2024.
  • Use: In the event that the CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2023 Champion – due to his location in the CONMEBOL Club ranking as of December 18, 2023 – corresponds to being seeded, said position and privilege granted by Ranking will prevail over his status as champion. of CONMEBOL Sudamericana, placing itself among the first line clubs.

    Draw Methodology:

    • Ballot 1 will be drawn with the teams that will occupy position 1 from groups B to H, who will be the seeds in each of the groups.
    • Then we will continue with bolillero 2 (position 2) which, in order of appearance, will complete groups from A to H respectively.
    • Next, the teams from table 3 will be drawn, which will complete position 3 of each group in order of appearance.
    • Finally, pool 4 (position 4) will be drawn, whose teams will occupy the last line in each of the groups from A to H respectively.
    • It is noted that within the same group there cannot be two teams from the same country, therefore, if they are drawn, they will occupy the next group and another team will be drawn again for said group.

    Use: EXCEPTION TO THE RULE: 2 clubs from the same country will be accepted in the group, only if one of the clubs is from Phase 3 of the competition.

    Group stage:

    The GROUP PHASE will be played by the teams representing Argentina (6), Brazil (6) and the 4 losing teams from the CONMEBOL Libertadores Phase 3 matches that will qualify directly for that phase, plus the 16 classified teams from the First Phase of CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2024.

    The 32 teams (16 directly classified teams and the 16 classified teams from the First Phase), which will be divided into 8 groups of four clubs each, will compete in the GROUP PHASE.

    The definition of the bolilleros for the draw to be carried out by CONMEBOL will follow the following criteria:

  • To define the seeds in each group, it will be used in the CONMEBOL Club Ranking as of December 18, 2023. The 8 seeds will be the teams positioned in the first 8 locations according to the aforementioned ranking.
  • The second line will be made up of the 8 subsequent teams in the CONMEBOL Club Ranking as of December 18, 2023.

  • In the GROUP PHASE each team will play one home match and one away match against each of the other teams in the same group.

    The winner of each group will qualify directly for the EIGHTH FINALS phase.

    The second place in each group will qualify for the EIGHTH FINALS PLAYOFF.

    Draw methodology:

    • Bolillero 1 will be drawn with the teams that will occupy position 1 from groups A to H, who will be the seeds in each of the groups.
    • Then we will continue with Bolillero 2 (position 2) which, in order of appearance, will complete groups from A to H respectively.
    • Next, the teams from table 3 will be drawn, which will complete position 3 of each group in order of appearance.
