After the significant defeat against Liège, Florian Kohfeldt resigned as coach in Eupen. He had only been in office since the summer.

Florian Kohfeldt (41) has announced his immediate resignation as coach of the Belgian first division soccer team KAS Eupen. The club announced this after Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Standard Liège. Accordingly, the former coach of SV Werder Bremen “asked for his release for sporting and personal reasons” in a conversation with club officials.

“I hope that this step will give the team an additional push for the playoffs and that we will be rewarded for our joint work at the end of the season! I keep my fingers crossed for AS!” Kohfeldt is quoted in the statement. Eupen is currently in 14th place in the 16-team league. KAS General Director Christoph Henkel said: “We have not managed to convince Florian that we can achieve our goals together with him.”

Kohfeldt, who coached both Bremen (October 2017 to 2021) and VfL Wolfsburg (October 2021 to May 2022) in the Bundesliga, only started his coaching job in Belgium last summer. Of a total of 31 competitive games with Eupen, the former coaching talent was only able to win seven and lost 21 games.

During his short time as interim coach at Werder in 2017, Kohfeldt first came to the fore and then took over the “Green-Whites” permanently in November of that year. He had previously coached numerous North German youth teams. Because of his initially appealing results with Bremen – he saved the club from relegation, narrowly missed the European Cup the following season, and was voted “Coach of the Year” by the DFB in 2018 – Kohlfeldt was at times also considered a candidate at Borussia Dortmund.
