European Union (EU) countries are set to approve on Wednesday the allocation of €5 billion in military aid to Ukraine as part of the European Peace Fund after reaching a “difficult compromise”.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, the Financial Times newspaper reported this.

According to her, France, with the support of Greece and Cyprus, insisted that “the fund reimburse the supply of weapons to Kyiv only of European production.” According to Paris, this will also help implement long-term strategic plans for the development of the EU defense industry. Others insisted on greater flexibility in the purchase of weapons – in third countries – to speed up their supply to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) if necessary.

According to the draft resolution, excerpts from which are cited by the FT, in reimbursed supplies to Ukraine, “priority should be given to the European defense industry (and Norway) <...> except in cases where it cannot provide supplies in a time frame that meets Ukrainian needs.” Such a flexible approach “will have the right to exist until a certain date,” the text of the proposed document states.
