The living wage should not be a one-size-fits-all approach and should reflect local or regional differences within countries. This is according to the document detailing the agreement reached by the Governing Council of the International Labor Organization (ILO). This was announced on its website by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CNSB), whose president Plamen Dimitrov was the chief negotiator on behalf of the group of workers in the ILO.

A sustainable strategy to promote a living wage “must go beyond just wage-setting mechanisms and include a broader consideration of factors,” the ILO believes.

According to experts, the concept of a living wage refers to “the level of pay that is necessary to ensure a decent standard of living for workers and their families, taking into account the circumstances of the country and calculated for work performed during normal working hours “, specified by KNSB. Remuneration should be achieved through wage determination processes that are consistent with ILO principles. This includes strengthening social dialogue and collective bargaining and empowering wage-setting institutions, the organization believes. The ILO also reports that there is a positive long-term trend in average wage growth globally, but millions of people around the world continue to receive very low wages compared to the cost of living and live in poverty.

At the end of January, KNSB said that to support a three-member family of two workers and one child up to 14 years of age in Bulgaria, 156 BGN more is needed on an annual basis for December 2023 compared to December 2022.
