In the municipality of San Vicente del Caguán, Caquetá, a promotional video announcing the inauguration of the “Gentil Duarte Agricultural and Environmental Boarding School (IAGD)” went viral.
The name of the school, referring to a deceased leader of a FARC dissident known as the Central General Staff (EMC), has generated strong criticism.
The Ministry of National Education has responded to this situation, stating that has not granted any authorization for the creation or formalization of the ‘Gentil Duarte’ school. In addition, it has not received requests for registration in the Single Directory of Educational Establishments (DUE), the national educational information system. The infrastructure in question is also not included in the educational projects of the National Government nor has it received public financing.

In an official statement, the Ministry reiterated its rejection of any association in the education sector with groups outside the law.. An articulation route has been activated with the Public Force and local authorities to guarantee that educational spaces are safe and protected for the community.
Regarding this fact, the Ombudsman’s Office also asked for clarity: “From the @DefensoriaCol we ask to review the conditions for an eventual start-up of a ‘school’ in San Vicente Del Caguán. “We require clarity about the work that intends to bear the name of a commander of an illegal armed group.”
“We categorically reject the promotion of recognition of members of illegal armed groups that have caused serious violations of Human Rights. Illegal armed actors continue to be one of the main systematic violators of the rights of children and adolescents with events such as the forced recruitment and especially in the department of Caquetá,” said the ombudsman, Carlos Camargo.
