The Municipal Authority of Rhodes is taking immediate initiatives after the shocking images that came to light from the Municipal Deer Park of Rhodes.

As soon as the Mayor of Rhodes, Alexandros Koliadis, was informed of the situation, he ordered the immediate intervention of the competent services of the Municipality. In this context, the Deputy Mayor of Primary Development Thomas Kostas and the Mandated Municipal Councilors for Environment, Greenery and Urban Development Giannis Mitsou and Care for Stray Companion Animals Michalis Thomatos, went on the morning of Tuesday, March 19 to the facilities of the Municipal Deer Park.

At the same time, with the personal intervention of the Mayor of Rhodes, immediate cleaning and beautification works of the surrounding area of the Municipal Deer Park begin, with the primary objective of improving the living conditions of the deer and protecting Public Health.

After the autopsy of Deputy Mayor Thomas Kostas and based on the assessments of the officials, it appears that the shameful situation that prevails in the Deer Park is the result of many months of neglect, while in the context of assuming his duties no information was given about the living conditions of the deer.

The responsible Deputy Mayor requested a full report in writing from the responsible veterinarian of the Deer Kennel on its operation as well as her suggestions for immediately dealing with the situation, while after the autopsy of all the services involved, an order was given to bury all the dead animals in order to protect them live deer but also public health.

Water and food were found to be adequate, however an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances under which the deer, all of which are male, died.

“The situation at the Deer Park of Rhodes does not honor anyone, that is why as a Municipal Authority we acted immediately to settle the operational problems with the aim of improving the living conditions of the deer and making use of the Deer Park space. The assurances we received are that the deer do not face a feeding problem, but this does not absolve anyone of the responsibilities for the shameful condition of the Deer Park which is the result of abandonment and indifference for many months, even years”, said the responsible deputy mayor Thomas Kostas after the autopsy at the Municipal Deer Center.
