Born in a family with limited resources
Ruchit Garg’s journey from a successful corporate career to becoming a champion for Indian farmers began with his childhood experiences. Born in a family of limited means, Garg faced financial difficulties after the untimely demise of his father. However, his mother’s job as a clerk in the Indian Railways helped her gain access to the railway library. Here his eyes fell on Harvard Business Review. It was here that Garg’s interest in entrepreneurship increased. He started dreaming of making a meaningful impact in the world.
Reached America because of talent
After completing his education, Garg joined Microsoft in Hyderabad. Due to his talent and dedication he was soon transferred to the company’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Garg worked as a Technical Program Manager for six years. During this period he used to get a salary of Rs 1 crore annually. However, despite the financial stability and prestige associated with his position, he felt unfulfilled. He wanted to get something else.
Took a big decision to leave the job
In 2011, Ruchit Garg took the bold decision to leave Microsoft and return to India to pursue his ambitions of running his own business. His grandfather was a farmer in Uttar Pradesh. Taking inspiration from him, Garg decided to bring change in the agriculture sector. Ruchit laid the foundation of a startup named Harvesting. The startup focuses on connecting farmers directly to consumers, eliminating middlemen and providing farmers with the support and resources they need to thrive.
Mission to empower small farmers
Harvesting’s mission is to empower small farmers and help them achieve better financial outcomes. The startup provides comprehensive services to farmers. This includes advisory support, access to high quality seeds and pesticides, and assistance in marketing and sales of produce. By leveraging technology, Harvesting enables farmers to sell their products both online and offline. This increases their reach. Their profitability improves. Since its inception, harvesting has made a major impact on the lives of Indian farmers. The startup claims that it has benefited more than 37 lakh farmers across the country.
