It is worth questioning the potential effectiveness of the EU mission in Armenia.

As Day.Az reported on Wednesday with reference to Russian media, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said this at a briefing.

“The question is what exactly is the subject of monitoring and whether this mission is recognized by the Azerbaijani side. I doubt that such a mandate will be met with understanding there. This is a unilateral decision by Yerevan. It is worth questioning the potential effectiveness of such a mission,” he emphasized.

It should be noted that the Armenian parliament ratified an agreement with the EU on the status of the EU civilian observation mission on the border with Azerbaijan. The agreement regulates the activities of the EU mission in Armenia, and also clarifies the functions of the mission in the country. Members of the mission cannot be detained or arrested, and personnel enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution in the host country. The objects of EU observers are also inviolable.

In addition, European observers are exempt from customs procedures, visa and migration requirements. They receive the right of free and unrestricted movement throughout the country.

The EU monitoring mission to Armenia was launched on January 23, 2023. The number of employees was initially 100 people. Moreover, on December 11 of the same year, it was decided to increase their number to 209 people.
