After activists, congressmen and relatives of political prisoner José Daniel Ferrer demanded a certificate of life due to rumors that he had died in prison, his family confirmed that he is still alive.

Since November 2023 there has been no news about the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), since his loved ones are denied visits and the regime ignores the international demands for his release.

In recent days, rumors have grown about his possible death in the Mar Verde prison, in Santiago de Cuba, and meanwhile, no spokesperson for the Castro regime confirmed it or denied them.

It was not until the afternoon of this Monday, March 18, that his daughter Fátima Victoria Ferrer Cantillo confirmed that José Daniel Ferrer is alive, after being allowed a brief visit of just two minutes in prison.

Cuban-American senator Mario Díaz-Balart expressed that the family of the Cuban opponent was very worried when they saw him, as they noticed that he was in a very deteriorated state of health.

“José Daniel Ferrer is alive, for now. According to his family, his health is dangerously deteriorating after months of mistreatment and abuse in prison. He has been detained, incommunicado and many times tortured,” Díaz-Balart explained.

The senator also demanded that the regime end its relentless persecution and release the activist, who is innocent, in addition to providing him with the medical care he urgently needs.

“The Biden Administration should strengthen sanctions against the ruthless Cuban dictatorship and demand life and freedom for Ferrer and all those who risk their lives today so that Cuba can be free,” concluded the congressman.

The regime finally allowed the visit to the political prisoner, after pressure was generated by congressmen and contestants, among them the US senator Rick Scott, the MEP José Ramón Bauzá.

Activist Rosa María Payá also published in X the request for proof of life from the national coordinator of UNPACU.

The daughter of the political prisoner, Ana Belkis Ferrer García, stood in front of the Mar Verde prison, accompanied by the activist Carlos Oliva, where they demanded that it be confirmed if the activist was alive.

Ferrer García has been imprisoned since the demonstrations of July 11, 2021, for joining the protests that took place on that date in Santiago de Cuba.
