(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, MARCH 20 – A microscope capable of going ever deeper inside the human eye up to 5 millimetres, seeing below the surface and observing the smallest details with a resolution of up to 4 micrometres . This is the new equipment that the Irccs Policlinico Sant’Orsola in Bologna has equipped with with an investment of 410 thousand euros. The latest generation device from Leica Microsystem is the first delivered in this version and was installed in the Ophthalmology operating room directed by Professor Luigi Fontana. It will give even more boost to corneal transplant surgery which in 2023 at the IRCCS reached a record of 317 operations, a third more than 2022 which closed at 242.
“Compared to previous microscopes – underlines Fontana – this device also allows us to see the thickness of the tissues during an operation. It is an innovation that we will use above all for corneal transplant surgery and which will allow us to operate with greater precision and safety” .
“Thanks to the complete integration with a high-definition Oct (computed optical tomography) tissue scanning system – explains the hospital in a note – the device allows you to also view a portion of the vertical section of the eyeball and, consequently, to know better reactions of the sub-superficial tissue to the maneuvers performed during surgery”.
In 2023, 40% of regional eye surgeries were performed in the surgical rooms of the operating unit (30% of the operated patients came from outside the region), 238 corneas were removed and sight was restored to over 300 patients. (HANDLE).
