The United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Wednesday called on EU countries that had previously suspended support for the organization to begin providing it with money again.

As Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax, this is reported by the Financial Times (FT).

“UNRWA Deputy Commissioner General Nathalie Boucley called on the nine EU countries that have stopped supporting the agency to resume payments as soon as possible,” the publication writes.

According to her, the agency’s available funds will last until the beginning of May at most. “We will be able to cope until the end of April or the beginning of May, beyond that is unknown,” FT quotes Bukli as saying. At the same time, she welcomed the resumption of assistance from EU countries such as Denmark and Sweden.

The publication writes that among the EU countries Austria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Romania have not yet decided to finance UNRWA again.

Also, according to him, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the EU summit on Thursday will call on EU countries to resume the transfer of funds to UNRWA. An unnamed official familiar with the situation told the FT that most EU member states have concluded that UNRWA’s work is indispensable.

Last week it was reported that Australia would resume previously suspended funding to UNRWA due to the worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

Denmark also promised to continue providing funds to the agency. Sweden and Canada also previously resumed funding for UNRWA.
