Kidneys are soldiers of the human body. They play a key role in removing waste and excess fluid from the body.

The kidneys also help maintain a healthy balance of water, salts and minerals in the blood, which is essential for good health.

However, unhealthy dietary choices can seriously harm kidney health. Here are some foods that you should eliminate from your menu or at least significantly reduce their portion in your diet.

1. Processed meat

Lithuanians like to joke that there is almost no meat in these products. So, smoked sausages, various sausages and hamburger patties have nothing to do with a healthy diet. Why can these products harm the kidneys?

Because they contain a lot of sodium, an excess of which can increase blood pressure. Doctors constantly remind us that high blood pressure increases the load on the kidneys and increases the risk of malfunctioning of this organ.

Studies show that consuming too much animal protein can increase the rate at which kidney disease progresses. Nutritionists advise to choose plant-based protein sources, such as peas, spinach, corn or broccoli.

2. Mayonnaise

Of course, a salad or a sandwich can be a healthy lunch. But not when everything is swimming in mayonnaise. Just one tablespoon of mayonnaise contains 103 calories. Also, mayonnaise is usually high in saturated fat.

If you can’t live without mayonnaise, choose low-fat, one with fewer calories. And also pay attention to the fact that mayonnaise does not contain a lot of sodium and sugar. It is best to replace mayonnaise with super healthy Greek yogurt.

3. Soft drinks

They are high in sugar and almost no nutritional value. Senseless calories often lead to weight gain. Studies have linked fizzy drink consumption to health conditions such as osteoporosis, kidney disease, metabolic syndrome and dental problems.

It is advisable to avoid sugary carbonated drinks and drink more water or make natural homemade lemonade.

4. Frozen dishes

Sure, it’s convenient to take a pizza out of the freezer and throw it in the microwave. Dinner is ready!

However, highly processed frozen foods are characterized by hidden fat, sugar or sodium. It is always better to prepare fresh and healthy foods and avoid frozen foods.

If you’re short on time and buying frozen food, choose one that says “low sodium” or “sodium-free” on the label. You can also try to “enhance” them by adding fresh fruits and vegetables from your kitchen.

5. Potato chips and french fries

The potato is the queen of vegetables in Lithuanian cuisine. They can be beneficial for health because they are high in vitamin C and potassium. However, the cooking process spoils this vegetable.

To preserve a healthy heart and kidneys, you should avoid fried foods. Also, higher amounts of potassium in your diet are not recommended if you already have kidney problems.
