Samsung Electronics, which was first in the global semiconductor market, fell to third place last year. This is the first time in 22 years since the statistics were compiled in 2001 that Samsung was pushed to third place. On the other hand, Nvidia rose from 8th place to second place, surpassing Samsung, thanks to the artificial intelligence (AI) craze.

According to market research firm Omdia on the 29th, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor sales last year dropped 33.8% from the previous year to $44.374 billion (about 59.8 trillion won). Due to this effect, the industry’s sales ranking was pushed down from 1st place in 2022 to 3rd place last year. It is the first 3rd place since 2001 when Omdia began compiling statistics.

On the other hand, Intel’s sales last year were $51.197 billion, down 15.8% from the previous year, but the decline in sales was smaller than that of Samsung, so it regained first place. Unlike Samsung, which relies heavily on memory, Intel’s main product is the central processing unit (CPU), so it is less affected by industry conditions.

NVIDIA, the world’s number one company in the graphics processing unit (GPU), which is essential for AI operation, jumped from 8th to 2nd. Last year, NVIDIA sales soared 133.6% compared to the previous year to $49.161 billion. Omdia said, “Despite the semiconductor slump, AI has emerged as an important growth engine. “NVIDIA is the clear winner in this market.”

However, unlike last year’s severe recession in the semiconductor industry, the industry believes that the market is likely to revive this year, focusing on high-performance semiconductors such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM), as the memory inventory surplus has largely been resolved and demand for AI chips has surged. Kyeong-Hyeon Gyeong-hyun, head of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor (DS) division (president), said on his social network service (SNS) on this day, “High-capacity HBM is competitive in AI applications. “This is why more customers are looking for HBM3E (5th generation HBM) 12-speed (developed by Samsung for the first time in the world),” he said, adding, “HBM leadership is coming to us.”
