Gas station owners in northern Greece have said they are at risk of bankruptcy due to cheaper fuel in Bulgaria.

For their part, hoteliers believe that the high price of gasoline will negatively affect the tourist season.

The chairman of the Association of Gas Station Owners in Attica – Maria Zanga told the media that the turnover of fuel dealers in Northern Greece has dropped sharply, where the price of gasoline has reached 2 euros per liter.

Greeks from the northern regions travel to Bulgaria for cheaper fuel.

“On the one hand, I justify people who cross the border to fill up with cheaper gasoline, but on the other hand, there is a risk of mass bankruptcies of gas station owners,” commented Zanga, quoted by the BNR correspondent in Thessaloniki.

The Ministry of Development reports that the average price of unleaded gasoline on the islands is over 2 euros per liter, and in some places it reaches 2 euros and 20 cents.

As a result, foreigners are less likely to rent cars because of expensive gas, travel agency owners complain.

The opposition is demanding that the government reduce the excise duty on fuels in the interest of both Greeks and foreigners during the tourist season.
