“On February 7, extraordinary presidential elections were held in Azerbaijan. These were the first elections held in the entire territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan. President Ilham Aliyev was re-elected for the fifth term.

The European Union takes into account the preliminary results and opinion of the election observation mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. According to the mission, the elections were held in a limited political environment and in accordance with laws that restricted basic rights and freedoms, including freedom of assembly, expression and the media.

Although the preparations for the elections were carried out effectively, the election process was characterized by the suppression of critical voices and the lack of political alternatives.

Election day was quiet and generally organized, but observers reported widespread disregard for mandatory procedures, a lack of transparency and numerous serious violations.

The European Union confirms the expectations of the Azerbaijani authorities that they will take into account and implement the recommendations of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights regarding this and previous elections. The European Union continues its participation in dialogue and cooperation with Azerbaijan for the sake of the welfare of the people of Azerbaijan, including in the field of good governance, human rights and the rule of law,” the statement said.
