Makenna Kindred, a 25-year-old former teacher from Central Valley High School in the state of Washington, was sentenced to a lenient sentence of two years’ probation after being convicted of having an intimate relationship with a 17-year-old student. The unusual case revealed the gap between the seriousness of the act and the light sentence given to the educator.

The forbidden relationship began in June 2022, when the student spotted Kindred’s Instagram account and contacted her with messages. Despite the age difference and the different status, the teacher started exchanging suspicious messages with him instead of breaking off the relationship. Shortly after, in November of that year, the 25-year-old had sex with the minor student at her home, while her husband was on a hunting trip.

For about a month, the forbidden affair went on in secret, until the student’s friends exposed it and shared screenshots of the correspondence with the school administration. At first, Kindred and the student both denied the existence of the intimate relationship, but a deeper investigation revealed the shocking truth.

The student admitted during the investigation that he was the one who initiated the relationship and began corresponding with the teacher through Instagram, sending her revealing photos and they even exchanged pornographic videos between them. It was also discovered that Kindred sent him messages full of sexual insinuations such as “I want you in my room” and “I really like you touching me”.

The student’s parents claimed that Kindred took advantage of her dominant position and began to pursue their son when he was 16. According to them, her abusive actions left deep mental scars in their son and he was forced to abandon his studies at some point due to the trauma.

Kindred stated in court that she regrets her actions and the damage she caused the student as well as her own family. However, after she was fired from her job, she began to receive mental health treatment for anxiety and depression problems which, according to her therapist, contributed to the commission of the crime but do not constitute justification.

The lenient sentence imposed on Kindred – only two years on probation, financial fines and the obligation to register as a sex offender for ten years – raised a lot of criticism in view of the seriousness of the case. However, apparently her mental state and the fact that she is a young mother of a small child was taken into account.
