The number of electric cars registered in Germany rose by nearly 396,000 last year to just under 1.41 million, according to the Federal Motor Transport Office.

The figures show that the increase in pure electric vehicles is slightly higher than in 2022, when just under 395,000 were added, DPA noted.

That means one in every 35 cars is a fully electric battery-powered vehicle (BEV), the federal agency said. If you include about 2,000 fuel-cell cars and 922,000 plug-in hybrids, that’s 2.33 million units — or about one in every 21 cars.

In Bulgaria, according to data from the “Industrial Cluster Electric Cars” as of March, the total number of registered passenger cars is 3,007,920, of which 13,083 are fully electric. This means that one out of every 229 cars is fully electric, or that the share of electric cars in our country is about 6.5 times lower, BTA reported.

Sales of new electric vehicles in Germany (other than registration data – author’s note) are expected to reach 524,000 in 2023, with authorities attributing the difference to the fact that a large number of the vehicles registered in Germany were destroyed in crashes, decommissioned or sold abroad.

The number of electric cars in Germany may grow more slowly this year, in part because the state purchase premium has been removed.

At just under 50,000, new all-electric car registrations in January and February were well below the previous year’s average. Sales in early 2023 also slowed initially after the bonus was cut.

The largest group of electric vehicles in Germany are SUVs, which account for more than a third of registered BEVs with 487,000 units. Minis and small cars followed with 238,000 and 235,000 units respectively.

When it comes to brands, Volkswagen is still the leader: around 237,000 electric vehicles from the Wolfsburg-based company are registered in Germany.

It is followed by Tesla with 164,000 units and Renault with 120,000 units, with Hyundai in fourth place with 92,000 units and BMW in fifth place with 85,000 units sold.
