Ireland intends to join the EU pact on migration and asylum. The corresponding message was posted on the website of the Irish government, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“Migration to the EU is a common challenge for Europe that requires common solutions. The EU pact agreement demonstrates our commitment to working together to ensure coherence, fairness and efficiency of our asylum systems, together to protect our borders, to combat the problem of secondary displacement [просителей убежища между странами ЕС], as well as to show solidarity with the countries on the borders of the EU that suffer the most due to illegal migration,” said the Minister of Justice of the Republic Helen McEntee, whose words are quoted in the document. “The pact will harmonize asylum procedures across the EU, and speed up the processing of asylum applications so that people in need of protection can quickly receive it, and those who do not need it can be quickly returned to their home countries.”

Dublin believes it is necessary to reform its migration policy due to the fact that Ireland has accepted more than 100,000 Ukrainian refugees – more than any other Western European country on a per capita basis – and faces a significant influx of asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa. Joining the pact will allow Ireland to expel asylum seekers who have arrived in the country from other EU states, as well as resort to the European solidarity mechanism, which allows countries facing increased migration pressure to share the burden with other members of the community.

McEntee also announced government plans to create migrant accommodation centres. Such centers will be able to accommodate up to 14 thousand people by 2028. The state rents housing for migrants on market terms, usually using hotels for these purposes.

On December 20, 2023, EU countries agreed on a pact on migration and asylum, according to which the countries of the community will have to respond to an increase in the migration flow into any of them. We are talking about either moving some of the illegal immigrants to the territory of another state in the community, or paying compensation for each rejected migrant. The initiative must still receive official approval from the European Parliament and community members.
