Local media, including the Time of Israel, reported that a large-scale protest demanding the resignation of the entire Israeli cabinet took place on the 31st (local time) outside the Knesset (parliament) in Jerusalem, Israel.

The group that led the protests called for the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet, an early general election, and an agreement on hostage negotiations to bring back 130 people taken hostage during a raid by the Palestinian armed faction Hamas on October 7 last year.

This rally is the largest since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas. Organizers claimed that more than 100,000 people participated in the protest, and media outlets reported that tens of thousands of people demonstrated. Hostage families also joined the government’s ranks.

“I can’t believe that such a successful country is being ruined by just one man and his henchmen,” said one protester.

“We need elections,” said another protester. “This government does not have the trust of the people. “They are trying to pass a law that will allow one in five citizens to avoid military service,” he criticized. This is a reference to the legislation on military exemption for ultra-Orthodox youth.

On this day, Prime Minister Netanyahu dismissed the demands of the protesters at a press conference, saying that if a general election were held now during the war, hostage negotiations with the government would be paralyzed for six to eight months.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said, “If we hold a general election now, it will paralyze hostage release negotiations and end the war before the goal is achieved,” and added, “The camp that would welcome this most would be Hamas.”

Earlier, anti-government protests were also held the day before in large cities such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Caesarea, Lanana, and Herzliya. In Tel Aviv, some protesters blocked a major road and police fired water cannons to disperse them. The police announced that 16 people were arrested in the process.

Protesters gathered in front of the Knesset in Jerusalem plan to pitch tents nearby and stay up all night, continuing their protests for the next four days.
