SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – Usiminas (BVMF:) announced this Monday that it will invest 950 million reais to improve the operational efficiency of one of its coke plants at the Ipatinga plant (MG), according to a press release.

“This reform is fundamental to guarantee our operational sustainability for the coming years with our own production of coke, which has better quality as fuel for the blast furnaces”, stated Usiminas.

“Our plan, after the repair, is to increase coke production by 12% and thus increase our competitiveness”, said the vice-president of primary areas at Usiminas, Célio Assis.

The work began in February and will continue until 2026. The company stated that the equipment – battery 3 of coke plant 2 – will be repaired without stopping production, “in a furnace relay model”. Coke is one of the main raw materials for steel production.

Currently, coke oven 2 operates only with battery 3, since 1 was stopped in 2012 and 3 had production stopped in December 2023, Usiminas stated.
