On January 18, the Khatai District Court of Baku heard a complaint about restrictions on the family members, meetings, and telephone contacts of “Abzas Media” website journalist Nargiz Absalamova.
According to the information provided by lawyer Shahla Humbatova to Voice of America, journalist Nargiz Absalamova was not brought to today’s trial.
“He did not participate himself. There was a lot of discussion about it. I filed a petition. I demanded that the meeting be postponed and the participation of Nargiz Absalamova ensured. But the court did not provide it”, said the lawyer.
According to him, the court also did not satisfy the complaint of the investigative journalist Nargiz Absalamova regarding restrictions on her family members, meetings, and telephone contacts.
“Although everything is obvious. I also justified in my complaint that there is no reason to limit Nargiz Absalamova’s meeting with her family members and contacting her by phone. This is not a restriction, but a complete ban. Even if it was the main thing, it could have been done differently. For example, it would be possible to create special conditions for meeting with family members in the detention center under the supervision of supervisors. That is, there are different ways. Instead, the investigative body took a short cut and imposed a complete ban,” the lawyer noted.
In addition, Shahla Humbatova also touched upon the reasons for restricting the journalist’s family members, meetings, and telephone contacts.
“The reasoning part of the decision is that it may hinder the exposure of other persons who committed this crime. It is necessary to impose such a restriction in order to prevent other crimes”, the lawyer added.
It was not possible to get any comments from the investigation in this regard.
