The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has named the main favorites of the candidates tournament, which starts on April 3 in Toronto with the participation of Azerbaijani grandmaster Nijat Abasov.
As reported by İdman.biz, in an article on its website, FIDE believes that the experience of Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura can have its say.
“The experienced Caruana and Nakamura (world number 3) are definitely the two big favourites. For the first time, they do not have to cross the Atlantic to participate in such a competition, they can take advantage of their territory,” FIDE emphasizes.
The article also mentions Ian Nepomniachtchi. “Nepomniachtchi will try to win his third consecutive Candidates Tournament, setting an unprecedented record for such young chess players as Praggnanandha (18) and Gukesh (17), as well as Vidit and Abasov, who are in their twenties. This will be the first Candidates Tournament for all four. Alireza Firouzja, who was number two in the world, despite the fact that he is only 20 years old, already has experience in participating in the candidate competition.”
